After The Rock vs John Cena ended in Cena losing the previous year at WrestleMania 28 (2012), John Cena would get his revenge/redemption a year later at WrestleMania 29 (2013) when it was John Cena vs The Rock for the WWE Championship by beating The Rock to win his 11th WWE Title reign. On the Raw after WrestleMania 29, John Cena wanted to celebrate his victory over The Rock by defending the WWE Championship in an open challenge which would be accepted by Mark Henry and Booker T would be the one to make it official on that night for the main event which ended in a count out win for John Cena which angered Mark Henry making him attack Cena before Ryback would come out to save Cena from Henry. When Ryback was doing his signature "FEED ME MORE!" catchphrase with the crowd, Cena would join in and also do this chant and with Cena not expecting it, out of nowhere Ryback would hit Cena with a Meat Hook Clothesline and a Shellshock followed by Ryback raising the WWE Title (Ryback's heel turn). Ryback would reveal that he turned on John Cena because he wanted to be WWE Champion and claimed that Cena wasn't a "good friend" because every time Ryback got close to winning the WWE Championship (from CM Punk mainly) or was left alone, The Shield (Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, & Dean Ambrose) would attack him with Cena nowhere to be found. The Shield in the following weeks assaulted both Cena and Ryback with Ryback either not helping and just watching Cena get beat down or just attacking him after Reigns, Rollins, & Ambrose were done with him (typically a Shellshock or using a steel chair, even did it when John Cena was helping Team Hell No (Daniel Bryan and Kane) from The Shield) but Cena would still help Ryback even after walking away but still hit him with an AA (Attitude Adjustment)/FU. Vickie Guerrero would make John Cena vs Ryback official for Extreme Rules in a Last Man Standing match and she allowed both Cena and Ryback to choose what stipulation they wanted because she promised the fans "extreme". Cena didn't care about the stipulation and because Cena had a injured Achilles (which Ryback would make worse using a steel chair after The Shield attacked Cena), Ryback would choose a Last Man Standing match type. John Cena vs Ryback at Extreme Rules in a Last Man Standing match would end in a double KO/count down/out after Ryback would hold Cena in a spinebuster position and run for a spear sending them both through a LED wall and even though they tried getting Cena on the stretcher, into the Ambulance, and to the hospital, Cena did refuse the medical help and Ryback was able to walk away with some assistance. The next night on Raw after Extreme Rules, Ryback would show up in a Ambulance and challenge John Cena to an Ambulance match at Payback which Cena would decline for a Three (3) Stages Of Hell match instead with the first fall/stage being a Lumberjack match, the second fall/stage being a Tables match, and if necessary, the third/final fall/stage would be an Ambulance match. In the weeks leading up to Payback, Ryback would put both Daniel Bryan and Kofi Kingston through tables to show what would happen to Cena at Payback and twice we got John Cena vs Curtis Axel (with Paul Heyman) where Axel would win in both matches by count out thanks to Ryback distracting Cena with the Ambulance and then attacking him, even throwing Cena off of the stage in the first Curtis Axel vs John Cena match, and in the second Cena vs Axel match, he would put Cena through a table leaned on the barricade with the same move he did to put the two (2) through a wall at Extreme Rules. This would lead to one massive pull apart brawl on the Raw before Payback. John Cena vs Ryback at Payback in the Three (3) Stages Of Hell match would end 2-1 for Cena since Ryback vs John Cena in a Lumberjack match ended with Ryback hitting a Shellshock on Cena for the 3 (three) count to win the first stage/fall (0-1), John Cena vs Ryback in a Tables match ended with Cena putting Ryback through a table with an AA (Attitude Adjustment)/FU to win the second stage/fall (1-1), and the finale of this rivalry/feud was John Cena vs Ryback in an Ambulance match which ended with John Cena hitting an AA (Attitude Adjustment)/FU through the Ambulance roof to get Ryback to fall inside of it to win the third stage/fall (2-1) and retain the WWE Championship.
