In an earlier video I introduced the ‘prototypical Kariera’ system of social organization found among Aboriginal tribes in parts of Australia. But what was introduced in that video was not the whole picture. Far from it, in fact. Here I look at a few originally neighbouring tribes, Kariera/Kariyarra and three more, in order to illustrate that while they all had the Kariera system of social organization, the names of the four sections varied somewhat, and the setup of the system a whole lot in the different tribes. This fact led to the Aboriginal habit of ‘translating’ different systems of social organization, which still exists today: ‘You belong to that section in your own tribe, that means that you belong to this section here’, and so on. And in the particular area that is being discussed here, the northernmost part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the Aboriginees made changes in the setup of the system and in the ‘translation rules’ in the second half of the 20th century, for practical reasons. What those practical reasons were, and what the end result was, are things that are also discussed in this video. #AboriginalAustralians, #AustralianAborigines, #AboriginalKinship, #AboriginalSocialOrganization, #AboriginalKinshipSystems, #Section, #panaka, #Purungu, #Karimarra, #Palyirri, #RadcliffeBrown, #RalphPiddington, #MarriageRule, #kariera, #Kariyarra, #Nyamal, #ngarla, #Nyangumarta, #PortHedland, #pilbara, #PilbaraWalkOff, #westernaustralia, #DonMcLeod, #DonaldMcLeod
