I'm at a pretty pivotal moment in my life right now, I've been working in a job for about 6 years, a job that, when I started, felt like it could be a career. And don't get me wrong, I do love my work and I'm proud of it, it meant that I could pay off my mortgage and I've met the most amazing friends. But rewind to little childhood me, who thought that she'd be an actress gracing the red carpet by now, and it's a little different from those creative dreams... And, as I look around at my friends and family, I often notice that everyone just seems to be exhausted all of the time, and the usual culprit is their job. My boyfriend works nights on the railway, my cousin's a successful solicitor, my auntie's a nurse, and my mum's worked for over 15 years in the leisure centre industry. And it got me thinking: how did it come to be like this? I'm aware that other countries do not work as many hours as the UK or the US, so how did our work-life narrative become the (at least) 40 work week that we know? And so, I took a bit of a deep dive into our work-life in the Western world throughout history. Particularly in a climate where many are questioning their work-life balance, bravely leaving a corporate job for a small business endeavour, or realising how precious their time is. And the thing is, for most, working 40 hours a week or more is a necessity for basic survival, but I just want to understand if we've actually 'got it good' compared to our ancestors, or whether this is something that needs addressing in the modern age.
