I'm giving you 3 lessons I learned from coffee shops for presentations in this week's episode of MasterTalk. Register for one of my FREE communication trainings: rockstarcommunicator.com
1. Presentations in many ways resemble a conversation with a friend over coffee. (0:49)
When you think back to the conversations in your life that brought you the most joy, to the coffee conversations that made an impact in your life, you weren’t trying to rush it, you weren’t trying to get away from it. You just fell in love with what it was. A powerful moment worth sharing, worth enjoying and never forgetting.
We need to start seeing our presentations that way too. We have 1 shot to talk to our audience before we have to grab coffees with other people, so why not enjoy the moment? Why not leave them with something as special as the conversations you’ve had in your life so that they don’t forget yours? That should be the goal of presentations, to speak in such a way that people want to keep our messages and our ideas close to them as they move towards life, so it’s about time we changed the mindset about that.
2. Sitting at a coffee shop allows us to slow things down & enjoy the moment that we’re in. (2:37)
When you’re outside on that terrace enjoying a nice coffee in the morning on your vacation, time starts to slow down, and if we’re with someone, we cherish every second that we have with them in that morning conversation. We ask them about their day, their experiences, their beliefs and we’re just in awe in how great this moment is.
We don’t see presentations that way. The #1 goal of any average speaker is getting in that presentation and getting out as fast as possible and coffee shops are a great way to think about this too since we have the bigger coffee chains where you’re running into the store as quickly as possible like you’re in a football stadium or something, rather than just sitting down for 10 minutes of your life and enjoying this awesome beverage you paid 5$ for.
3. Enjoying a cup of coffee just such as important as the effort it takes to make a great one. (4:10)
By recognizing the effort it takes to get a simple cup of coffee right, it’ll help us better understand how we can transition that obsessive focus for excellence in our everyday lives whether its with the attention we give to our loved ones, to the times we spend with our families to the important work that we do in our lives.
Most of us don’t spend enough time focusing on every detail of our speech, we have 2 days to prepare and go eh, what content should I put here, I guess I’ll do this, but when we start to pay attention to it a bit more, we’ll start to vary our vocal tones, be a lot more energetic, and present in a way that inspires people to take action and find something great to do with your ideas, so share them in a way that matters, don’t just skimp on the coffee filters, but focus on making the greatest cup of coffee that you can, because trust me, we can notice the difference.
