Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. v. Scheider | 360 N.E.2d 930 (1976)
Roy Scheider was one of Hollywood’s great actors. He earned Oscar nominations for his performances in the films The French Connection and All that Jazz. In Jaws, he uttered one of the most famous lines in film history. Quote, “you’re gonna need a bigger boat,” unquote. But on at least one occasion, he tried to get out of a project, arguing that his contract hadn’t been completely negotiated. This led to the New York case of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer versus Scheider.
Scheider contracted with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to act in a pilot film and subsequent television series. The parties agreed to the broad outline of the contract, including its financial aspects, and everyone expected they’d iron out the remaining details. These remaining details were, in fact, agreed on, with one exception: the starting date for filming the TV series. Scheider shot the pilot movie, but claimed that without a starting date, he wasn’t contractually obligated to shoot the series.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer sued Scheider in New York Supreme Court, the state’s trial court. That court found that a contract existed, and the Appellate Division affirmed. Scheider appealed to the New York Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state.
