Most commonly, people with acid reflux will experience a burning sensation behind their breastbone. This can be accompanied by a number of other symptoms, which Dr Devinder Bansi, a leading gastroenterologist describes.

Other acid reflux symptoms may include:
- acidic taste in their mouth
- sickness or nausea
- coughing

If acid reflux is not treated, complications may arise, such as dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). This results when the lower end of the oesophagus narrows, restricting the passage of food.
