The scrap business, particularly in India, is a significant and lucrative industry.
On average, a kabadiwala (scrap collector) collects scrap from 8-10 households per day, purchasing various materials such as paper, metal, plastic, and e-waste for around 350 rupees and selling them to small recycling companies for approximately 500 rupees. With a profit of 150 rupees per household, a kabadiwala can earn between 12,000 to 15,000 rupees per day, resulting in monthly earnings of 36,000 to 45,000 rupees.
India has around 4 million sanitation workers involved in this scrap business, contributing to a monthly industry worth 180 billion rupees.
The electronics sector offers the highest profits, as circuit boards can be recycled to extract valuable gold, with recyclers earning up to 800,000 rupees per week from 1,000 kilograms of circuits.
This thriving market has led to the emergence of startups such as Scrapshala and Scrapuncle, generating monthly revenues of 2-3 million rupees.
