Description:
In the early days of space exploration, humans didn’t want to be the test subjects on space travel, so animals were the next best thing. Regardless of your stance on animal rights and what not, they were the ideal organisms with enough similarities to the human body that they were the perfect test subjects. From dogs, to cats, and to monkeys, these animals were forced to take risks and who knows if they even understood what was exactly going on. Yes, there is something pretty disturbing when it comes to forcing an animal to be shot into a rocket into the great unknown. However, think about the incredible things they must have seen while descending upon their journey. These animals are considered to be heroes in many space exploration programs, as their sacrifices paved the way for humans to advance in space travel.
The first animal to reach the high atmosphere was a sheep named Montauciel in 1783. He proved that organisms could survive in the higher atmosphere by traveling by balloon, and he had a safe landing as well, so any long term effects could be monitored.
Albert was the original space monkey who started it all when it comes to animals in space, who soared over 83 miles in a V2 rocket. Unfortunately, Albert didn’t survive the end of the trip, as he died from parachute failure. Laika the dog was the first animal to achieve orbit. She was a stray dog that was picked up by the Russian space program and her survival wasn’t expected, so she was treated very well for the few days before her launch. After Laika achieved orbit, her spacecraft, Sputnik 2, overheated and she died.
The first animals to go into space and return safely were two dogs by the name of Dezik and Tsygan. However, Dezik returned to space a week later and died of parachute failure. Two more dogs named Belka and Strelka went to space, reached orbit, and returned safely. Strelka had a number of puppies upon her returned. Sounds like her and Belka were really celebrating their survival by repopulating the puppy world. Following these two dogs, two more dogs by the name of Veterok and Ugolyok were sent into orbit and remained there for 22 days. Afterward, they had a safe return.
Felicette was a cat that was sent into space, and had a safe return. She was the first confirmed cat to go to outer space. Felicette had electrodes implanted in her brain so that her brain activity could be monitored by the French space program. Her health was monitored for several months, and she was just fine. Sadly, she had to be put to sleep when she came back so the electrodes in her brain could be removed and examined.
Gordo was a monkey nicknamed, “Old Reliable” and was very beloved by NASA. Unfortunately, after reaching 310 miles into the sky, Gordo died from parachute failure. Ham the Chimp was sent into space and would receive rewards for pulling levers and pushing buttons. The point of Ham’s mission was to study the decision making effects of the human brain in space. Finally, there was Able and Baker who were weightless for 9 minutes of their 16 minute flight. Both monkeys returned safely and reached nationwide fame.
