Should South Africa emulate China? Last week Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa, led a business delegation to China. The main focus was on State Owned Entities and what South Africa could learn. State Owned entities dominate the Chinese economy and they've achieved amazing feats. But there are currently concerns about competitiveness. China is also an authoritarian country where the government directs the economy and brooks no challenge. The strong state has been accompanied by controls, and we certainly felt this when we tried to feed videos over the internet. The internet is monitored and it's not clear if we were targeted - but the speeds were slow enough to scupper many of our transmissions.
