“Involving women more in national security is not just the right thing to do, it’s a national security imperative,” says Dr. Joan Johnson-Freese. “We see these things that are happening around the world with gender inequality and gender issues as separate from national security affairs, and they’re not.”
Dr. Johnson-Freese teaches National Security Affairs at the Naval War College in Newport and is an expert in space security. For the past 25 years, she has worked in professional military education – a non-traditional career path for women. Dr. Johnson-Freese teaches a class on Women, Peace, and Security at Harvard Extension and Summer Schools. In the course of her career, she has come to understand that including women’s perspective in conflict resolution and conflict prevention is essential to long-term peace and stability.
“The relationships between women and men that start in the home and the community, transfer over to local and national affairs,” observes Dr. Johnson-Freese. “In countries with high rates of gender inequality, there are also high rates of national violence.”
Dr. Johnson-Freese believes that we are at a pivotal moment in our national conversation about gender equality. Her talk, “Half of Heaven: Why More Women Are Needed in National Security” explores the exigent need for Congress to prioritize implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Act of 2017.
