This special video is to honour two Railwaymen, Driver Jack Mills and David Whitby who was the secondman, both men took over the 1M44 Glasgow Central to London Euston 'up Postal' for Royal Mail train at Crewe on the 8th August 1963. But between Leighton Buzzard and Cheddington, the train was stopped at a signal which was tampered by robbers which lead to them stealing £2.6 Million and a uncalled horrific assaulted on Jack Mills and David Whitby, both men never recovered from what happpened and Jack Mills passed away in 1970 while David Whitby passed away 2 years later.
Today naming was long overdue and also to a tribute to Jack Mills and David Whitby who gave great service to the railways and both men showing extreme bravery whilst at the controls of 1M44.
This video shows DB Schenker Class 90, 90036 on platform 8 at Crewe with the nameplates covered up moving from platform 8 to platform 12, then the naming ceremony of 90036 which is to be named Driver Jack Mills, after that Jack Mills's grandson got presented with a plaque of the train name.
Then also in this footage, shows Peter Waterman and David Whitby’s sister doing the honours of unveiling of a commemorative wall plaque which is situated outside the booking office where they would have signed on for work on that fateful day.
Then it was followed by a short prayer by the railway chaplain and the final clip to end this wonderful ceremony was the departure of DB Schenker Class 90, 90036 Driver Jack Mills departing platform 12 at Crewe to head to Crewe TMD.
This video is dedicated to Jack Mills & David Whitby, may them rest in peace and I hope everyone enjoy this wonderful ceremony
