After seizing power of Niger and taking President Mohamed Bazoum captive last week, the nation’s military junta has been given an ultimatum to “restore constitutional order” within one week or face “force.”
The ultimatum came from leaders of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS, who, with “immediate effect,” instated strict financial and travel sanctions between all ECOWAS member states and Niger on Sunday.
The announcement followed a “peaceful” protest in Niger’s capital, at the French embassy, where anti-France and pro-junta supporters rallied for a better Niger, without the country’s democratically elected leader.
On Sunday, military junta spokesperson Col.-Maj. Amadou Adramane claimed that, despite the junta’s threats of “bloodshed and chaos” France has been authorized to “carry out strikes” at the presidential palace — where Bazoum is being held — by Niger’s acting prime minister, Hassoumi Massoudou, if they want to attempt to free the hostage.
The French foreign ministry has neither confirmed nor denied being authorized to strike in Niger, saying the only authority the country recognizes as legitimate in Niger is Bazoum.
