This is a demonstration of how to clear a flooded engine on a 2002 Mazda Tribute. It also works on most fuel-injected cars too. To perform this, make sure the engine is off, then hold down the gas pedal and turn the key to start the engine. You will hear the engine turn over repeatedly but not start. As long as the gas pedal is held down, the fuel injectors and spark plugs are turned off. As the starter motor turns the crankshaft, the pistons move up and down and when the exhaust valves open up, any unburnt gas is pumped out. Here's the interesting part: it's extremely unlikely you'll ever flood your fuel-injected engine. Back in the old days of carburetors, it was easy to flood an engine if you pumped the gas pedal too many times before starting it. But EFI (electronic fuel injection) is completely computer-controlled. The only way I can imagine someone flooding an EFI engine is by cycling the key between on & off about 100 times or so. When you do this, a very small amount of fuel is sprayed into the cylinders.
