Soviet Legend Yelena Mukhina had a breakout year in 1978. She went from being the AA runner-up the year prior at Europeans to the number one gymnast in the world by attaining the gold medal 🥇 at the 1978 World Gymnastics Championships in Strasbourg 🇫🇷. In addition to AA gold, she also won a share of the gold on floor, silver on bars, and another silver for this beam routine 😍.
Sadly, Yelena's life would be changed forever when she became a quadriplegic whilst over-training after coming back from injury in hopes of making the 1980 Soviet Olympic team. She landed on her neck practicing a roll-out skill, and lived the rest of her life mostly in reclusion. She passed away due to complications of her quadriplegia on 22 December 2006 😢. RIP to one of the sport's greatest trendsetters 🙏.
