The game is set in the Erebonian Empire and takes place after the Trails in the Sky trilogy and concurrently with Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure.

Despite its wealth and military prowess, Erebonia is in a state of political instability. The Reformist Faction, a class of powerful, educated commoners whose upward social mobility began to directly challenge the longstanding Erebonian nobility, gains more military might for the sake of changing the class system and the Nobles Faction, nobles that want to keep the status quo without changing the class system, does the same leaving Erebonia in a constant state of fear of civil war.

During the tension, the protagonist, Rean Schwarzer, attends Thors Military Academy and is enrolled in the new Class VII, a class with both commoners and nobles. Rean and his classmates ready themselves to face this political instability that threatens civil war as others pull strings from the shadows.
