Portugal has once again been thrown into political turmoil with the defeat of its ninth government since the 1974 revolution. The legislative rejection of the stillborn cabinet of technocrats has hurled the country into a major crisis. The fall of prime minister Alfredo Nobre da Costa was engineered by an alliance of the socialists, conservative center democrats and a handful of Marxist leftists. It was the intervention in the nation's politics by President Antonio Eanes which led to Premier da Costa's appointment.
