⭐️ Happy Loving Day! ⭐️
Richard and Mildred Loving proved love wins.
They were an interracial couple whose landmark case, Loving v. Virginia, played a pivotal role in legalizing interracial marriages. Richard Loving, a white man, and Mildred Jeter, a Black and Indigenous woman (from the Cherokee and Rappahannock tribes), fell in love and married in Washington, D.C. in 1958. However, their union was illegal in their home state of Virginia due to laws that prohibited interracial marriage.
In 1958, the Lovings were arrested and charged with violating Virginia's Racial Integrity Act. They pleaded guilty and were sentenced to one year in prison, though the sentence was suspended on the condition that they leave Virginia and not return together for 25 years. After several legal battles, the case reached the US Supreme Court, which unanimously ruled in favor of the Lovings on June 12, 1967. The Court's decision struck down laws banning interracial marriage in Virginia and across the country, declaring them unconstitutional.
Today, their legacy lives on as a symbol of love, resilience, and the fight for equality under the law.
