This episode: Cyclades E15 sailing from Milos to Sifnos
The Meltemi are the strong, dry north winds of the Aegean Sea, which blow from about mid-May to mid-September.They are at their strongest in the afternoon and often die down at night, but sometimes meltemi winds last for days without a break. . These winds are dangerous to sailors because they can come up in clear weather without warning and can blow at 7-8 Beaufort. Some yachts and most inter island ferries cannot sail under such conditions. A katabatic wind, meaning "descending", is the technical name for a drainage wind, a wind that carries high density air from a higher elevation down a slope under the force of gravity. Such winds are sometimes also called fall winds. They can rush down elevated slopes at hurricane speeds.
Provatas is a popular beach on the south coast of the island of Milos. It is located 9 kilometers south of Adamas. There are several taverns and a number of apartments and hotels. Besides the beach there are many caves. The colour of the sand is golden yellow and red. There are umbrellas and sunbeds for hire. The water is quite shallow, making it ideal for families with young children.
Sifnos was inhabited by human beings from at least 4000 BC, archaeological evidence indicates the island was within the mainstream of Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age Cycladic civilization. The island was very wealthy in ancient times, thanks to its gold, silver, and lead, which were being mined there as early as the 3rd millennium BC. Modern scholars suggest that some of the mines flooded because they had eventually been dug to a depth below sea level, Sifnos was one of the first places in Greece to mint coins, beginning around 600 BC .Vathi is a very popular place for sailboats to stop, with a perfect sheltered harbour. The beach stretches for about a mile and though not officially a nude beach, you can get far enough away so that nobody will care. Like Kamares it is also shallow and very safe for children. There are several of the islands potters located here including a very impressive workshop on the far side of the bay.
The Cyclades comprise about 220 islands, the major ones being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Eschati, Ios, Kea, Kimolos,Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros, Tinos, and Thira or Santoríni. The name "Cyclades" refers to the islands forming a circle ("circular islands") around the sacred island of Delos. Most of the smaller islands are uninhabited
