Out here in the forest, you might come across things you might not normally see. Take this for example, the Skoda Octavia Scout.
Often overlooked, it might surprise you to know that the Scout has been on sale in Australia since 2008 - this new generation arriving in 2014.
Essentially a jacked-up 4x4 version of the Octavia wagon, we take a look at the latest 2015 Scout to see if it has all the skills to earn its merit badge.
This 132 TSi scores a power tailgate, and while still a mid-size car, it offers a 588 litre boot which expands to over 1700 litres when the seats are folded flat – thanks to handy remote releases.
The back seats have impressive headroom as well as decent legroom. There are vents, map pockets and storage bins in the doors.
Up front, the driving position is good as is outward visibility.
There’s everything you want – automatic, front and rear parking sensors and reverse camera. You get radar guided cruise control and lane departure assist.
There are LED lights, keyless entry and start, dual zone climate control, even a chilled glove box.
The 8-inch colour touch screen has the usual phone and audio functions as well as navigation, which includes my favourite feature – the rocket!
Being the 132TSi, the car features a 1.8-litre, 132kw / 280Nm – turbo petrol engine with good midrange response.
The Scout can be a bit thirsty though. Our drive seeing it just over 10L/100km – up on the claimed combined cycle of 7.1 L/100km.
The biggest issue with the Scout though is the gearbox. The 6-speed dual-clutch DSG is mostly smooth at changing gears on the move, but at low speeds – particularly in traffic – tends to be slow to react and very elastic in its response.
