For this little box I decided to go a little bit extra. I started by resawing a piece of poplar to get all of my parts. The sides and front were laid out so the grain wraps around the sides and front of the box. The back and the front were matched so the grain is continuous from the bottom to the top. Additionally, the back was book matched in order to gain a little extra height.
The bottom is held in with drawer slips. At 3/8" (9.5mm) thick, the box is too thin to support cut in grooves that would normally house the bottom panel.
This project was started because I keep misplacing my tape measures. Let me tell you, the box works great! Until you take one out and then the entire thing tips.
