Polio is an infectious disease, contracted predominantly by children, that can lead to the permanent paralysis of various body parts including the breathing muscles. No cure exists for the symptoms, but in the 1950s effective vaccines were developed and have been used around the world since then.
India rolled out the Pulse Polio Immunization Programme on 2nd October 1994, when the country accounted for around 60% of the global polio cases. Within two decades, India received ‘Polio-free certification’ from World Health Organization on 27th March 2014.
