Hormonal disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women and low testosterone levels in men, can disrupt normal ovulation or sperm production, leading to infertility. Fertility naturally declines with age. In women, egg quality and quantity decrease after the age of 35, while in men, sperm quality can decline with age. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, obesity, and lack of physical activity negatively impact reproductive health in both genders. Conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, blocked fallopian tubes, diabetes, or thyroid dysfunction can impair fertility. In men, issues like varicocele (swelling of veins in the scrotum) or low sperm count can be contributing factors.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle by maintaining an optimal weight, eating a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and managing stress can improve fertility. Hormonal treatments, ovulation-stimulating drugs like Clomiphene Citrate, or medications for underlying conditions such as thyroid disorders can address infertility. Surgery may be required to treat physical issues like endometriosis, fibroids, or blocked fallopian tubes in women, or to correct varicocele in men.
