When I got a call to bike the White Rim Trail in Moab I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I have biked in Moab, Utah many times and it is a lot of fun, but I was not prepared for what I was about to undertake.
We started on Friday afternoon, after a delay from car troubles and biked 30 miles to our campsite. The next morning was beautiful and we had a day of 54 miles biking before us. It was amazing, but thoroughly exhausting!
I learned a few things from this experience. First, the limits of the human body, and my body, are further than I think. I was able to bike much further than I planned on and even though my body was saying NO! I was able to keep going past that point to complete the ride.
The second this is that I learned that this is true of EVERYONE! So many of the other riders rode further than they had before. It was hot, painful, and exhausting...but the human body can push through.
This definitely has applications for Physical Therapy where strengthening and stretching can be uncomfortable, but that discomfort brings a new awareness of what we are able to do. It also signals to our body to build more muscle, endurance, and strength.
Without going through physical challenges, we cannot grow stronger and more adapted physically. I think the same goes for mental challenges as well. Mental challenges happen all the time to all of us, but sometimes we need to seek out the physical ones.
If you are looking for a great ride, the White Rim is amazing. Just be prepared for rough roads, long distances, and fantastic views!
