Cool Way To Solo Over m7-5 Chords.
In this video lesson I'm answering a question sent in from Dinilo asking about ways to solo over m7-5 chords.
A m7-5 chord is also known as a 'Half Diminished' chord and they come up in many of the tunes we play in gypsy jazz.
To make it simple I've taken one of my favorite ideas and licks which I use over these chords and shown you how to apply it to your solos.
It's important to note that m7-5 chords are almost always the 'Minor 2' of a Minor 2-5-1 progression. So in D minor the progression would be Em7-5, A7 , Dm.
The beauty of the lick in this lesson is that you start by simply fretting the m7-5 chord. :-)
Here's how it goes in E minor.
1. Fret an F#m7-5 on the 9th fret
2. Play each of the 4 notes in the chord evenly.
3. After playing the last note simply play down the scale A, G, F#, E, D#
4. You can either resolve to the minor G or the major G#.
Try it on 'What Is This Thing Called Love' over the Gm7-5, C7, Fm and also 'Night And Day' Em7-5, At, D Major (resolving to Major)
Once you have this lick down it will really open up your soloing options when approaching minor 2-5-1's and give your solo lines real definition when playing through this common progression.
have fun!
Robin
