An airstrike by Syrian government forces killed 33 Turkish soldiers in northeast Syria, a Turkish official said on Friday, marking the largest death toll for Turkey in a single day since it first intervened in Syria in 2016.

READ MORE: Several soldiers were injured and taken to Turkey for treatment, Rahmi Dogan, the governor of Hatay in Turkey, which sits on the border with Syria, said early Friday.
The losses came after weeks of growing tensions between rebel supporter Ankara and Damascus ally Moscow.
In a statement, the US State Department said it is "very concerned" about the reported attack, adding "we standing by our NATO ally Turkey."
