Cervical fixation and fusion is a surgical procedure to align and correct instability at the junction of the spine and skull. The total recovery time is 6 to 8 months. You will be in the hospital for 3 to 4 days.
Recovery tips:
Walk slowly every day for the first few days then gradually increase the pace.
Shower after 3 days. Avoid direct water pressure on the incision and pat dry the incision area.
A soft diet for the first 2 weeks is recommended. You can eat yogurts, puddings, ice creams, cooked vegetables, soft fruits, and protein shakes.
Sleep on your back with knees bent and a pillow tucked in your knees. You can sleep on the side as well with knees bent and a pillow between your legs. Avoid sleeping on your stomach and with arms on the head as this puts stress on the shoulders and neck. To change sleeping positions in bed, use the log roll technique.
Avoid twisting, bending, lifting, pushing or pulling objects heavier than 5 to 10 lbs for at least 6 weeks.
Driving: Wait for at least 5 to 6 weeks.
Avoid swimming in the pool for 6 weeks or until the incision is healed.
Return to work: You can return to work within 8 to 12 weeks. Avoid sitting on soft couches or soft chairs where hips drop below knees. Don't sit for a long time, take breaks by standing up and stretching after 30 to 45 minutes.
