The Cure no es precisamente conocida por sus letras ligeras y sus vibraciones alegres — pero con una historia como ésta, ¿quién podría culparlos?
Los temas de la música de The Cure podrían describirse como una combinación de melancolía, desamor y tragedia. Y esas emociones difíciles no sólo son un elemento importante del estilo de la banda — sino que también son responsables de la propia existencia del grupo. Tras el post-punk de Three Imaginary Boys, de 1979, The Cure adoptó plenamente su sombría atmósfera sónica en Seventeen Seconds, de 1980. En las notas de una reedición posterior del álbum, Robert Smith dijo:
"Fue el primer disco que sentí que era realmente The Cure".
En 1981, el estado de ánimo y la música de The Cure se oscurecieron aún más: por esas mismas fechas, la abuela de Robert murió inesperadamente, mientras que a la madre del baterista Lol Tolhurst le diagnosticaron el cáncer que acabaría cobrándose su vida. El propio Robert también se enfrentaba a pensamientos persistentes de muerte inminente y sin sentido. Años después, declaró a Uncut:
"Tenía 21 años, pero me sentía muy viejo [...] más viejo que ahora. No tenía fe en nada. [...] Sentía de verdad que no iba a estar vivo mucho más tiempo. Me esforcé mucho para asegurarme de que no fuera así".
A la desesperación, la desesperanza y las ideas suicidas se sumó la muerte en mayo de 1980 de un contemporáneo del post-punk británico, Ian Curtis. Robert recordaría más tarde:
"Todo se vio reforzado por el hecho de que Ian Curtis se había suicidado. Sabía que The Cure eran considerados falsos en comparación. [...] Si quería que la gente aceptara lo que hacíamos, iba a tener que dar el paso definitivo".
Aún así, no todo es pesimismo. Como también dijo:
