Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
In this video I am covering my top five things a pet owner can do to help their dog with arthritis feel better and do better. Arthritis in the dog can be painful. Arthritis causes inflammation and pain inside of a dog's joints. The inflammation from the arthritis will make the doggy painful and possibly slow down and just not enjoy life as much.
We all know dogs want to play and have fun, so as a veterinarian my goal is to get every dog with arthritis back to being happy and healthy.
The first option to help a dog with arthritis feel better is holistic medicine. A veterinarian chiropractor can help the joints feel better. Also other eastern medicine options like acupuncture can be very helpful when managing arthritic pain and inflammation in dogs. I also included cold laser therapy in this option too. Cold laser therapy on dogs can help improve blood flow to the joint that has inflammation from the arthritis. Cold laser therapy is completed by a large number of veterinarians now. A veterinarian that performs acupuncture or chiropractor care is a little bit harder to find, but most larger cities do have them.
The second option is to start a non steroidal anti inflammatory medication like carprofen also known as rimadyl. There are a number of different non steroidal anti inflammatory medications, but your vet will help you pick out the best NSAID for your doggy. These medications will help reduce inflammation and pain in the joints with arthritis. NSAIDs can greatly improve a dog's mobility. A veterinarian will want to take some blood first and on a regular basis to make sure the dog is healthy enough for an NSAID.
The third option is starting a joint supplement. Just like people, a dog will greatly benefit from a joint supplement. The joint supplement that I recommended is glucosamine and chondroitin. Dog joint supplements help to maintain a dog's joints.
The fourth very important thing a pet owner can do for a dog with arthritis is make sure their dog is a healthy weight. If a dog is over weight, they need to lose weight if they have arthritis. If a dog is overweight there is more pressure and weight on their joints, making the pain and inflammation from the arthritis even worse.
The final option is to have a dog with arthritis take pain medications too. Pain medications should not be given just by themselves. Some dogs are very painful from arthritis and they need something for the pain; however, pain medications without trying everything else recommended will not provide the best results.
