May 29, 2015 - NAZ Today takes a look at why Flagstaff same-sex marriage advocates are celebrating this week.
The success of a referendum that made Ireland the first country to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote is now an event that has left local activists hopeful that the United States will soon follow suit.
Ryan Stevens, Flagstaff Attorney, says this is a beautiful thing and shows that humanity is moving forward by being aware of diversity. He also discusses his involvement in the Phoenix lawsuit to challenge the constitutionality of the Arizona prohibitions on same sex marriage.
Steven's case was a success and Arizona is now one of 37 states to legalize same sex marriage.
Dr. Maura Adshead, Sr. Politics Lecturer, Univ. of Limerick, says the referendum in Ireland was also a success because of the language used. The Yes campaign framed the question as an issue of equal rights rather than a gay rights issues. It was hard for the No campaign to argue against equal rights.
