This was a tough match against a superior young grappler who had prior experience in the recent One Shin Cup Tournament. His game plan was to take me down and pick me apart using his BJJ skillset; however, I was fortunate to have had Coach Nick show me the previous day how an amateur MMA fighter reacts to being taken down versus that of a professional. I remained calm and composed in order to conserve my energy and tried to find the right moments to attempt a sweep or submission. By threatening the kimura arm lock in half-guard (something which Coach Nick had me drill incessantly all last week) I was able to neutralize most of the offence in his ground game. Luckily, I was able to secure the decision victory by landing reversals and finishing each round in top control. Considering the technical nature of the bout, neither of us had caused one another any significant damage, which was quite a relief considering how vicious some of the other matches in the tournament had been. After the judges decision, my opponent's coach came to congratulate me and offer encouragement, remarking that I had great grappling skills. Classy move from the coaching team at EMAC!
