The tradition of giving a Mano de Azabache to a new born baby is widely popular in all Hispanic countries, for protection from el Mal de Ojo the evil eye, envy and malice. The evil eye is a curse believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. Many cultures believe that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury. A Talisman or amulet is created to protect against the evil eye.
El azabache is an amulet believed to protect the new born against the evil eye and negative energy. It is usually a little fist made out of pure black jet in necklace or bracelet form, usually in gold, with black and red beads.
Hispanics belive people can give off negative energy, envious or even be resentful towards a new born child so the baby wears a blessed amulet, a small gold cross necklace or bracelet.
Azabache, also known as Jet, is a lignite, which is a precursor to coal. It is a minor gemstone and is completely black in color, which is where the saying "jet black" originated. The actual Azabache gem is a decomposition of wood from millions of years in the past and is over 182 million years old. Jet was used in Britain as early as 10,000 BC and was used as jewelry in the Bronze Age, mostly as necklace beads.
The modern day Hispanic, Mano de Azabache originated with the Roman and Italian Malocchio influences in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain / Portugo) and was always viewed to be inbued with magical properties, and the ability to deflect the gaze from the evil eye.
Hispanic parents adorn their young children with the azabache charm to protect them from jelousy and harm. It is also an amulet that protects a child from the evil spirits, simply take the azabache charm and either place it on the baby as a bracelet or pin it to their clothing. Most of the azabache charms are worn by babies, but there are some people who continue to wear them into adulthood, believing they offer them protection from evil.
The evil eye, also known as the Mal de ojo, is a curse cast by someone passing off a malevolent stare. This is usually cast upon a person who is unaware of the stare, so babies are suspect to it. The belief is that the azabache charm will protect and dispel or divert the curse of the evil eye.
Malocchio is a condition of unluckiness that comes from someone or something else. Its origin usually lies in envy and according to elders the bad luck can be caused intentionally and unintentionally. The origin of this belief can be dated back as far as the ancient Greeks and Romans. They believed in the negative power of envy. A state that can cause an enormous amount of bad luck to the envied subject. Humans were warned to not brag too much because even Immortal Gods could become jealous of human happiness and luck and destroy their life. Many Italian and Latino Hispanics still don't say a baby or child is beautiful, neither do they want to hear someone saying this about their child. This can cause il Malocchio.
It is very important to know how to find out if you are the subject of the evil eye. According to popular traditions there is a list of signs that may indicate this. Think of: being particularly goofy, losing things and missing opportunities, doing bad things while we usually do good which also can be felt as a sensation of illness and weakness.
Horn Charms are a very powerful symbol to avoid Malocchio and bad luck in general. Italians can make this gesture when they see someone that they consider particularly envious, able to bring bad luck or when someone is wishing something bad. Another gesture is touching something made of iron.
The power of horns as phallic symbol can be reproduced using amulets in forms of horns: these amulets are called "cornetti" or Cornuto and are very common in Italy. They usually look like a red hot pepper, since they are colored in red. The color red is being used because in the past to obtain the the strongest effect the amulet had to be made from red coral. You can see "cornetti" against the Malocchio basically everywhere, hanging somewhere in Italian cars and places to take away the evil eye from that person, family or activity.
