Patras Carnival Greece is the largest carnival in Greece and one of the largest in Europe, established 180 years ago.
It is one of many Carnivals held in Greece finishing at the end of February before Clean Monday.
I went to the Night parade and concert, on the Friday night, before the Grand Parade on the Sunday, which involves over 40,000 people.
Patras, in the Peloponnese was packed with visitors from Athens as the final carnival weekend is always a bank holiday in Greece.
Carnival in Greece is the equivalent of Halloween, or Guy Faulks and involves dress up, masquerade and costumes, especially for the young. It has its roots in pagan festival, celebrating Bacchus the God of Wine, and the coming of the Spring. It is now adopted as a Christian festival.
The Carnival in Patras is unique in Greece because apoart from being the largest it is also based on Italian Carnival, rather than Pagan festival, as with other carnivals in Greece.
Patras is a big city, the 3rd largest in Greece, and a major port for the Ionian Islands and Italy.
