“Nothing says Christmas like beating a log until it poops candy.”

In Catalonia, Christmas takes a weirdly fun turn with Caga Tió, a smiling wooden log that “poops” presents. Starting on December 8th, families adopt the log, give it a red hat, and “feed” it daily with fruit and nuts to keep it happy (and, presumably, regular).
On Christmas Eve, the family gathers around, grabs sticks, and starts whacking the poor log while singing:
“Poop log, poop nougats,
Hazelnuts and cheese, if you please.
If you don’t poop well,
I’ll hit you with a stick,
Poop log!”
After this heartwarming ritual of bribery and threats, the log “poops” candy and gifts (carefully hidden under a blanket, in case you thought the log actually had magic bowels). Once it’s emptied, the family tosses it in the fire, because why not end the night with a little festive arson?
