Allyship is the practice of standing up for and supporting marginalised groups of people; it is about using one's privilege to help others who are disadvantaged!
In the context of race, allyship can look like:
Challenging racist language and behavior when you see it
Educating yourself about racism and its impact on Black people
Supporting Black-owned businesses
Donating to organisations that support Black communities
Speaking out against racial injustice
Using your platform to amplify the voices of Black people
Allyship is not about being perfect. It is about being willing to learn, grow, and make mistakes. It is about being committed to doing your part to create a more just and equitable society.
Here are some specific examples of allyship from the speakers of the UK Black Business Entrepreneurs Conference 2023:
** Jan Marchent, the MD Home and Clothing at Tesco, one of the largest retailers in the UK. She has spoken out against racism and has spoken about her commitment to making Tesco a more inclusive workplace.
** Mayank Shah , Founder & CEO Minority Supplier Development UK working to create a level playing field for ethnic minority businesses.
** Richard Burge, Trade, International business
In addition to Lord Dr Michael Hastings CBE, Theresa Harrison, Director Environmental Social Governance Services: Building, and Dr Carlton Brown.
