As Morocco digs out from a deadly earthquake in its High Atlas Mountains, the indigenous Amazigh nomads who roam these peaks and nearby valleys are facing a crisis of their own: the loss of their traditional lifestyle due to climate change that has brought years of drought and decimated grazing vegetation. But two brothers are working to save this historic community before it is lost forever.
This video and companion article were reported by a group from New York University’s international field reporting class GlobalBeat, a joint project of NYU Journalism and the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies. The team included Marlowe Starling, a graduate student at NYU’s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program, Rana Morsy, a Moroccan-American graduate student in Near Eastern Studies, traveling to Morocco for the first time as a journalist, and Rishabh R.
