The Maya culture was one of the most powerful and longest lasting
civilizations in the history of the world. For thousands of years, they dominated the Yucatán peninsula in Central America. The Maya were fierce warriors who practiced human sacrifice, but they were also scholars, writers, mathematicians, astronomers, and artists. They developed a complex and accurate calendar system, a the only true writing writing system in the Americas, and a base-20 number system including zero (one of only a few cultures in history to discover it!)
