Matala is located 67 kilometers south west of heraklion was populated since ancient times also was used like a port of Phaistos, but Matala became very famus in middle sixties when the hipies from all world started to live there and their life style became very popular.

Nowdays the caves that their first use was from Romans like tombs, and later was used from hippies like homes, are museum open to the public during. the day around the popular beach are many shops restaurants and hotels all the area is well organized
every June the last years take place a festival in Matala and then all area is extreme crowded but very nice too!
