The Carpathian population is estimated at about 8,000 brown bears, being the second largest in Europe.
In Slovakia the number varies between 500–800 animals.
Tatra mountains has more than 100 of brown bears and their wildest areas Tichá and Koprová valleys separated by Liptovské kopy boast the highest density of bears with incredible population of 40 animals.
Despite that bears use to be connected with danger and fear in the people’s minds, it is possible to observe them from a reasonable distance, even from the hiking trail.
Female bear with two cubs was observed from red striped hiking trail in the High Tatras Temné Smrečiny.
The animals were located at the S face of Liptov walls being the Slovakia/Poland border line.
Another long expected encounter happened in the upper segment of Tichá valley near the shelter Pod Tomanovou, where this solitary bear was observed from the yellow striped hiking trail.
It foraged over the opposite bank of Tichý creek at the E foothills of Liptovská Tomanová being part of the Western Tatras.
