In this video, I have purchased a new SHARS 8" 3 jaw chuck. When I pulled it out of the box, I tried the action. It was very stiff and felt really gritty. It also had some tight spots where the adjusting screws didn't want to turn at all. In this, I tear it apart to see what is going on. I find TONS of grit and burrs on some of the gear teeth that I had to hand file and smooth.
Overall this is a nice chuck. It is very well made and there is no slop or play in any of the moving parts. Some of the gear teeth needed some finish work, but nothing major. I would recommend this chuck, but if you do buy this, you will need to do the same thing that I do here, tear the whole thing down clean it extremely well with some solvents, re-grease and re-assemble. If I didn't tear this chuck down, it wouldn't have lasted me very long. The grit would have acted like valve grinding compound and just tore the chuck apart from the inside out.
I did only pay 160.00 for this chuck, so I guess it comes with territory. As the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for". But with minor work this chuck was back up and ready to run. Like I said earlier, it is very well made and it seems as though it will perform very well.
