"The reports that I have states that a three vehicle convoy travelling south on highway one was attacked with an IED, vicinity Samara, at about 9.10 this morning. The IED attack caused, at that time, two US killed in action and one wounded and a third... the wounded soldier subsequently passed away. The convoy observed a vehicle in the vicinity and an individual was seen departing the area. We have notified all units and we're conducting an exhaustive search for the vehicle and the individual and one of our units is securing the IED site. I would tell you our hearts go out to the families that are going to be getting information that is absolutely unnecessary at this time of year or any time of the year, and our deepest regrets go out to those families and they will be our thoughts and in our prayers. As well as the Iraqi police service members that were shot and killed today as well. These are senseless, unnecessary deaths and the sooner we can get these deaths down to zero the better."

"500 meters in the distance, I heard a blast and I looked up and saw a minibus blown up. I saw a lot of injured and I saw a boy of 12 blown to pieces. He was just a passer by, he was not in the car."

STORYLINE:

US jets and gunships backed an artillery bombardment aimed at insurgents in southwest Baghdad on Wednesday, as troops raided homes and arrested a Sunni sheik said to be close to the most wanted man in Iraq.

A string of separate bombings killed six civilians and three American soldiers.

The soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb at about 9 am (local time) as they travelled in a convoy near Samarra, a town north of Baghdad where insurgents have often launched attacks.

US military commanders said the number of daily rebel attacks had slowed in recent weeks, even before the December 13 capture of Saddam Hussein.

American troops have capitalised on intelligence gleaned from the former dictator's arrest, rounding up dozens of guerrilla suspects in raids on strongholds of anti-US resistance.
