Murten is the capital of the Lake District of the Canton of Freiburg. It is located in the southern shore of Lake Murten, a beautiful site to enjoy during summertime.
Murten (which is also known as "Morat" in French) is a fortified medieval town. Its name came from the celtic word "moriduno", that means "lakeside fortress". But Murten is more than that...
Shopping, spectacles, good food, water sports, wine... Murten and, broadly, the region of the three lakes (Drei-Seen-Land in German or Le Pays des Trois Lacs in French), which comprises the bigger lakes of Biel/Bienne and Neuchâtel, has much to offer to the tourist.
Murten is also famous for the "Battle of Morat" that took place in 1476. The Duke of Burgundy laid siege to the city for 13 days but Murten was finally saved by the Bernese army. Murten citizens celebrate this victory every June 22.
If you visit Murten, do not forget to taste the famous Vully cake ("Gâteau du Vully"), which is a typical dessert from the neighbour town of Vully, just in the opposite shore of the lake.
