Senator Dan Sullivan (AK) joined LSC and a panel of experts for a Senate briefing in April on how legal aid organizations provide critical assistance to victims of domestic violence.
Millions of Americans experience domestic violence every year, and legal aid is essential to protecting survivors and their families. In 2018, LSC-funded legal aid organizations reported closing more than 129,000 domestic violence cases. Every day across the country, legal aid attorneys are helping domestic violence survivors gain economic independence and help them rebuild their lives.
The briefing was held in cooperation with Senator Sullivan, who delivered opening remarks. He was joined by LSC Board Chair John G. Levi, who also delivered remarks, and LSC President Jim Sandman, who moderated the discussion. The panelists were Nikole Nelson, Executive Director, Alaska Legal Services Corporation; Katherine Shank, Deputy Director, Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago; Gary Wachtel, Senior Director, Law, Discover Financial Services, Inc.; and Brenda B., a former client of Neighborhood Legal Services Association in Pittsburgh.
