Documentary about the construction of automatic transmission and power units for Austin 1100s.
Begins with shots of Austin 1100 car being driven by an attractive couple through a scenic landscape. We see the man change gear. They arrive in a pretty market town and drive through the centre. One of the towns on signposts is Dorchester. C/U of the gear stick then cut to gear stick being tested in factory.
Long sequence showing the construction of "Automatic Transmission and Power Units" as mentioned in title. Good shots of men on production line assembling the transmission units. Construction is followed step by step with good C/Us of assembly process.
Various shots of gear box system being tested. Pressure gauges are seen in C/U and men concentrating on RPM gauges. Some of the production line is automated but seems pretty basic by modern standards. Various parts of the structure are tested as the gear boxes are assembled. The automatic transmission and power units are painted green then we see them being fitted into the car chassis. Cars are driven on to testing blocks. Gear box is tested.
Exterior of the BMC factory - Austin 1100s are driven out of the car park - hundreds of cars are seen lined up. Film ends with the couple we had seen earlier. Although there is no sound, it seems as though the woman is telling her husband that she wants to drive. She pulls a driving license and "L-plate" out of her handbag.
