Periyalvar (c. 9th century AD), also known as Vishnucitta, was one of the twelve Alvar saints of southern India, best known as a member of the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. His name is also transliterated as Periyahwar, Periyazhwar or Periyazhvar.

The verses of Alvars were compiled as Nalayira Divya Prabandham and the 108 revered temples were classified as Divya Desam. According to some reports, Periyalva is considered the first of the twelve Alwars, while other reports place him as the eighth. His original name was Vishnuchittar because he blessed Lord Vishnu. He believed that he was the elder of the Lord and was therefore called Periyalvar.

According to Hindu legend, Periyalva was the adoptive father of the only female Alva Andal. Periyaval's writings contributed to the philosophical and theological thought of Vaishnavaism. His contributions include Thirupallandu and Periya Azhwar Thirumozhi in the 4000 verses of Nalayira Divya Prabandam.

Nalayira Divya Prabandham is a collection of 4,000 Tamil verses (Naalayiram means "four thousand" in Tamil) written by 12 Alvars and compiled in its present form by Nathamuni between the 9th and 10th centuries. This work is an important liturgical compilation of Tamil Alwars and marks the beginning of the canonization of the 12 Vaishnava poet saints, whose hymns are still widely sung today. These works were lost before they were collected by Nattamuni and compiled into anthologies.
