Kanlaon Volcano erupted on Monday afternoon, Phivolcs said.

It said the 3 p.m. eruption “produced a voluminous plume that rapidly rose to 3,000 meters.”

Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or hot, ground-hugging flows of ash and debris descended from Kanlaon’s southeastern slopes, it added.

Phivolcs raised the alert level for the volcano from 2 to 3 on a zero-to-five scale, warning more explosive eruptions were possible.

Local governments were advised to evacuate the 6-kilometer radius of the volcano.
