About this event:
The 1986 Chernobyl accident remains the worst accident in the history of nuclear power generation. As a consequence of contamination in Ukraine and Belarus the human population was evacuated in 1986 from an area of approximately 5000 km2 surrounding the nuclear plant creating the ‘Chernobyl Exclusion Zone’ (CEZ). This area remains abandoned until today and there are other areas outside of the CEZ where agricultural production is not officially allowed (about 1500 km2 in the Ukraine). The CEZ offers the opportunity to study the impacts of radiation on wildlife under conditions of chronic exposure. However, there is considerable disagreement amongst scientists on the extent of any effects and the radiation exposure rate at which effects might occur. The presentation will discuss the history of the CEZ and the controversy over effects on wildlife.
