A posterior vitreous detachment is a common cause of floaters and even sometimes flashes in vision. Having new floaters in vision can be alarming, and it's important to have a dilated eye exam to make sure the retina isn't damaged. During a posterior vitreous detachment, the retina can get tugged on leading to a retinal hole or retinal tear or even a retinal detachment. All of these need to be evaluated and treatment is always better sooner rather than later (within days) to prevent permanent vision loss. Even though a posterior vitreous detachment is a normal occurrence and no problem on it's own, it can lead to more serious issues AND it can have the same symptoms as serious issues. Don't hesitate to call your doctor if you are seeing floaters, flashes, or any sudden changes in vision.
