Volvo Cars started production of the all-new S60 mid-size luxury sedan at the company’s first American manufacturing site in Ridgeville, SC. The 2019 S60 is the first Volvo car to be built in the USA. The first cars will arrive at American Volvo retailers later this year. Global distribution will begin in spring 2019.
“We’re proud to launch Volvo’s first American-made car,” said Jeff Moore, Vice President, Manufacturing, Americas. “Our team is dedicated to delivering the exceptional craftsmanship, Scandinavian design and dynamic feel that defines the Volvo brand.”
The South Carolina plant is the latest addition to Volvo’s manufacturing footprint, which now covers all major continents where Volvo Cars operates. The company has two manufacturing plants and an engine plant in Europe, three manufacturing sites and an engine plant in China, and assembly plants in India and Malaysia.
The South Carolina site encompasses 2.3 million square feet on 1,600 acres and includes a body shop, paint shop, final assembly facility, vehicle processing center, office building and soon, Volvo Cars University. Construction on the site started in 2015.
In 2021, the South Carolina facility will build the next generation XC90 luxury SUV. With the two car lines, the plant will be able to produce up to 150,000 cars annually.
