It is estimated that it will take approximately two years for the tear down of the current Folly Beach pier and the construction of a new one. The reason for the tear down is SHIP WORMS !!!!!! This pier will be greatly missed, especially by people who fish and people who like to dance (mostly Shag) on the pier. Those nights were named Moonlight Mixers. The Shag dance originated in the African American community in the late 1930s and rose in popularity among a broader audience in the 1940s, as interest peaked in the "beach music" that accompanied it. The Shag, specifically the Carolina Shag, has been called the "swing dance of the South" and lives in a class of its own. Maybe they will dance on the beach for the next two years but it definitely won't be the same. Folly Beach will continue to be a popular destination for locals and for visitors. What a celebration it will be when the new Folly Beach Pier is opened. This video was made on October 16, 2020 and the beach was well populated but it DID look like the groups of people were spaced out. It was 87 degrees so beach season in Charleston, SC is NOT over. I'm not sure that it is ever REALLY over in Charleston. I've spent many New Years Eves at Folly Beach, staying at The Tides.....some years watching the FLIP FLOP DROP but most years watching the incredible fireworks display The Tides puts on the beach at midnight. I've watched people SWIMMING in the ocean on New Year's Day.................not me! Folly Beach will always hold a special place in my heart. I spent several vacations there as a child with my friend's family. I love Folly Beach, with or without a pier. Dear old Folly Beach Pier, you will be missed.
