Glaucoma is a progressive condition irrespective of whether you treat or do not treat glaucoma is going to progress. But with early diagnosis and treatment a person does not go blind at the present generation. People used to go blind before because they were not diagnosed and they never went for any eye checkup and if they were diagnosed they were diagnosed quite late in life. Glaucoma can affect any age group and a child born with congenital glaucoma. Young children can develop Glaucoma called as Juvenile glaucoma or adults can also develop Glaucoma called as different types of glaucoma like primary open angle glaucoma or angle closure glaucoma. But at the present time with so many medications available excellent surgical techniques that are available to control the intraocular pressure, a person should not go blind. Coming to the way of life or quality of life, one need not change any lifestyle. If you are diagnosed to have glaucoma the change that we require is use is the drops that are prescribed by eye surgeon. Use it religiously, regularly and have a good compliance with the medication. Do not stop the medication for any reason. Second is go for a regular check up as advised by a doctor and do not feel that glaucoma, I started using the drops used for one month and not cured and the most misconception when I start using the drops. When I start using the drops, glaucoma is like diabetes or hypertension. There is no cure for it but one can keep it under control. Other important thing to remember is Glaucoma is the Silent Thief of Sight. It robs you off your vision without you being aware of. So I always tell my patients that you do not have any symptoms but after you start using the drops, the symptoms of watering or irritation, but this is a small price to pay if you want to read a normal healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life without being blind.
